Heralds of Spring

Returning cranes, Brandenburg.  Returning cranes. Heralds of the coming Spring, Brandenburg.

As preparations get underway here in Somerset and Gloucestershire for the next egg collecting trip, we have heard from Beate and the team in Brandenburg, Germany that the cranes are returning to their breeding places and starting to display  - despite the continuing cold weather.   The annual return of the cranes in March is an exciting time for those living there, as the cranes come in advance of the Spring and remind them that the long winter days are soon over.  Their calls are starting to echo out across the landscape as they reclaim traditional territories, reinforce pair bonds and forge new partnerships.  The birds that we will be releasing later this year are twinkle in the eyes of these returned birds, with the fertilized eggs being laid between the last week of March and the first week of April.  The cycle of life starts here!
